How to Clean and Maintain a Burr Grinder

Keep your coffee tasting fresh and your grinder running smoothly with these essential maintenance tips.

Coffee beans contain oils. Over time, these oils coat the burrs and internal chambers of your grinder, eventually turning rancid. Stale coffee grounds also get trapped inside. If you don't clean your grinder, even the best, freshest coffee beans will taste muddy, bitter, or stale.

Here is how to properly clean and maintain your burr grinder.

Weekly Maintenance: Brush and Vacuum

You don't need to deep clean your grinder every day, but keeping the easily accessible parts clean will go a long way.

  1. Empty the Hopper: Remove any beans from the hopper.
  2. Purge: Run the grinder for a few seconds to clear out any remaining beans in the chute.
  3. Brush: Unplug the grinder. Remove the hopper and use a stiff brush to sweep away loose grounds from the top burr carrier and the chute.
  4. Vacuum: Use a vacuum with a hose attachment to suck out any remaining loose grounds from the burr chamber.

Monthly Deep Cleaning: Cleaning Pellets

Once a month, it's highly recommended to use grinder cleaning pellets (like Urnex Grindz). These are food-safe, grain-based pellets shaped like coffee beans that absorb oils and push out old coffee particles.

  1. Empty all coffee from the grinder.
  2. Add a capful (about 35-40g) of cleaning pellets to the hopper.
  3. Adjust your grind setting to medium.
  4. Run the grinder until all the pellets have passed through. (It will look like yellow dust).
  5. To purge the pellet residue, add a handful of cheap or old coffee beans to the hopper and grind them through.
  6. Discard all the grounds.

Deep Cleaning: Disassembly (Every 3-6 Months)

For a thorough clean, you'll need to remove the top burr. Never use water to clean your burrs, as they will rust.

  1. Unplug the grinder.
  2. Remove the top burr: Consult your grinder's manual. Usually, this involves unscrewing the collar or removing a few screws.
  3. Brush and wipe: Use a stiff brush, a wooden toothpick, or a dry rag to thoroughly wipe down the top and bottom burrs, removing all caked-on coffee oils.
  4. Vacuum: Vacuum the entire burr chamber.
  5. Reassemble: Carefully place the top burr back in and secure it. Re-calibrate your grind setting if necessary.

A clean grinder is the secret to clear, bright, and delicious coffee!
