Step by step

  1. 1

    Know your water(Every time)

UK tap water is hard in most regions (150-250 mg/L). Limescale coats the boiler and group head, raising brew temperature and clogging flow. If your area is 'very hard', descale monthly.

  2. 2

    Backflush the group (daily-weekly)(1 min)

With a blank basket in, run the machine with a group-head cleaner tablet, then run water through with no basket. This flushes coffee oils that go rancid and bitter.

  3. 3

    Prepare the descaler(0:05)

Use the manufacturer's descaler (Sage and De'Longhi sell branded sachets) or citric acid at 1 tbsp per litre. Never use vinegar — it attacks seals and smells.

  4. 4

    Run the descale cycle(20 min)

Fill the tank with descaler solution, place an empty cup under both the group and steam wand, then run the machine's descale program. Repeat with clean water twice to rinse.

  5. 5

    Keep a descale log(Ongoing)

Note the date on the box or in your phone. Hard-water UK machines that skip descaling die young — a £5 sachet every quarter protects a £500 machine.

Barista tips

  • Descale more often in winter — cold mains water carries more dissolved minerals.
  • A water filter (or filtered jug water) cuts descaling frequency dramatically.
  • Clean the steam wand after every use: wipe, then purge for 2 seconds.
  • Backflush weekly if you drink milk drinks — dairy oils are the worst residue.
