Step by step

  1. 1

Grind and prep the ice(Step 1)

Grind 16 g of coffee slightly finer than your normal AeroPress setting — the fast brew needs extra extraction to punch through the chill. Weigh 100 g of ice into your serving vessel and put the rinsed filter in the cap.

  2. 2

Add coffee and hot water(Step 2)

Add the grounds to the chamber, start your timer, and pour 130 g of water just off the boil (93–96°C). The lower volume compensates for the melting ice — total dilution lands at a normal strength.

  3. 3

    Stir and steep(0:00 - 1:15)

Give it three firm stirs to saturate everything, insert the plunger slightly to stop drips, and let it steep about 75 seconds. Hot-but-brief extraction keeps acidity bright instead of bitter.

  4. 4

    Press onto the ice(1:15 - 1:45)

Press gently for 20–30 seconds until it hisses. The brew hits the ice and chills instantly — that 'flash chill' locks in aromatics that slow cooling would lose. Swirl, pour over fresh ice if you like it colder, and drink immediately.

Barista tips

  • Use large ice cubes — they melt slower than crushed ice, so the coffee never goes watery.
  • Grind finer than usual; cold masks acidity and you need the extra extraction.
  • Sweet tooth? Stir in 5–10 g of condensed milk for an instant iced latte vibe.
  • Light-roast African coffees shine here — expect stone fruit and florals over ice.
  • Scale the recipe by weight: whatever your vessel holds, use roughly 40% of the total liquid weight as ice.

Frequently asked questions

Aim for roughly 1:14 total yield — we use 16 g of coffee, 130 g of hot water, brewed directly onto 100 g of ice. The ice counts as part of your water, so the final strength matches a normal cup rather than a diluted one.
