Flaws, but not dealbreakers

How to choose

Descaling — how often?

Every 2–4 weeks depending on water hardness. If you live in a hard-water area (most of the UK), descale monthly. Soft-water areas can stretch to 6 weeks. Signs your machine needs descaling: slower flow, off-flavour, or the machine's warning light.

Backflush — the weekly ritual

If your machine has a 3-way solenoid valve (most machines built after 2010), backflush weekly. Run detergent through the blind basket, let it sit 10 seconds, then flush clean. It takes 2 minutes and makes a huge difference to shot taste.

Group head cleaning

Wipe the group head after every shot — coffee oils go rancid fast. A quick wipe with a damp cloth takes seconds and prevents stale oil buildup that taints every shot.

Frequently asked questions

No. Vinegar leaves a lingering smell and can damage rubber gaskets and seals. Use a citric-acid based descaler like Urnex Dezcal or De'Longhi EcoDecalk — they're safer and more effective.
